It was like day 4 when the SWAT team kicked the door in. That’s when the pranks started – they wanted to see it live on JustinTV. They came in guns drawn, we were going, ‘Don’t shoot us please.’

Justin Kan

THE IDEA

Chris Nelson and Demi Taylor were commissioned to tell the story of the emergence and subsequent impact of Twitch in a 25 minute documentary that blends a high octane VO with astute and perceptive talking heads.

Directed by Peter Hamblin

Produced by Hamblin Imagery x Red Bull Media House

THE RESULT

Twitch documentary premiered as S02 E01of the award winning The Ripple Effect Series to a global audience on Red Bull TV written by Chris Nelson and Demi Taylor.

THE APPROACH

In June 2011, Justin Kan and Emmett Shear launched Twitch, a website that would become the platform for eSports and live streaming, driving a revolution in how consumers use the Internet.

We spoke with Twitch founders Justin and Emmett to learn how a series of pivots and an attempt at 24 life streaming sparked the idea for Twitch – the platform that turned computer games into eSports, driving an industry that now out performs both music and movies. We also integrated the tales of key players involved in the journey, posing the questions that would bring the story to life.

Bringing together a fast paced and insightful voice-over with multiple talking heads, we created a script and guided the narrative from paper edit to completion.

Gideon Yu came and said, ‘Your business is fucked. It had grown and grown and grown and then it was flat and anything that’s flat on the Internet is fucked, because the Internet is growing… so you’re shrinking in terms of market share.’ That gave us the kick in the pants we needed.

BODYSURFING & BEING

THE ART OF BODY SURFING – BRAND EDITORIAL – DEMI TAYLOR

LIGHTNESS OF BEING

> READ <

The wave crests, and I’m cast into shadow, a moment’s pause, an inhalation then, kick, kick, kick, reach, go. Holding my breath, just for a second I’m suspended in time and face, then unleashed, racing down the line, left arm outstretched, body taught as the wave chases me down.

THE IDEA

Demi Taylor was commissioned to explore the art of bodysurfing in a seasonal feature for outdoors brand Finisterre to support S/S swimwear line launch.

THE RESULT

Written by Demi Taylor the article features on the Finisterre website.

Supported by imagery sourced by Demi Taylor.

THE APPROACH

Demi was commissioned to write content copy for Finisterre to support S/S swimwear line launch. The resulting feature drew on Demi’s personal experience as a bodysurfer. Supported with interviews and anecdotes from both the world’s best bodysurfers as well as Finisterre brand ambassadors she tied the copy back to the brand.

The Lightness of Being (an excerpt)

I first met Mark Cunningham in Ireland in 2001. Bundoran was playing host to the World Masters Surfing Contest and a who’s who of icons were in town to compete. There were the two Tom’s – Carroll and Curren – Rabbit, Kanga, Kong, The Sultan of Speed and The Wounded Seagull, and Simon Anderson riding his game-changing Thruster. And then there was Mark – lifeguard from Ehukai Beach Park, running water safety. We spent a lay day in the infamous Bridge Bar, trading tales and talking surfing.

With broad shoulders and a broader smile, he talked in yet broader brush stokes about 25 years spent guarding on the North Shore – nonchalant, sincere, humble. It was only after Mark left that one of the assembled legends leant over and explained to me, with a certain reverence, that I’d just been in the company of the godfather of modern bodysurfing. Mark was a man who dominated at Pipeline for some 20 years scooping every title going, setting the template in the style stakes. Quietly committed. And that was my first lesson in bodysurfing – that there’s no room and no need for ego. It’s a lesson that’s doled out whenever I swim out: body surfers are not at the top of the pecking order, and that’s OK.

JENNY JONES

STEP BY STEP – INTERVIEW FEATURE – DEMI TAYLOR

STEP BY STEP

> INTERVIEW FEATURE <

The sun’s rays have cast a golden shimmer across the ocean. I’m sitting in the line up with Jenny Jones – Olympic medalist, 3 times X Games winner and multiple British Snowboard Champion, her eyes fixed firmly on the horizon. We rise and fall with the passing swell and our chatter drifts back to snowboarding. “There was a time before the Olympics when I felt ready to begin winding down my competitive career, then I got the call…”

Step by Step, The Jenny Jones Story by Demi Taylor

THE IDEA

Demi Taylor was the Editorial Manager for the 2019 Watergate Hotel Magazine, involved in the production of the publication from content planning through to commissioning, flat planning, as well as editorial contributions including a feature on Olympian Jenny Jones during her stay at Watergate Bay Hotel.

THE RESULT

The interview feature with Jenny Jones written by Demi ran to 4 pages in the Watergate Hotel Magazine.

THE APPROACH

Demi was the Editorial Manager for the 2019 Watergate Hotel Magazine, involved in the production of the publication from content planning through to commissioning and briefing writers, illustrators and photographers as well as copy editing, flat planning and talent management.

Olympic snowboarder Jenny Jones took time out with Demi Taylor during her stay at Watergate Bay Hotel to contemplate her journey from dry slope to become the UK’s most successful snows sports athlete while soaking up the best of what Watergate has to offer. The four page feature accompanied by original illustrations by Victoria Jones brings the journey and experience to life.

Olympic snowboarder Jenny Jones takes time out with Demi Taylor to contemplate her journey from dry slope to Olympic hope and soak up the best of what Watergate has to offer.

The stars are clear and bright in the night sky, so what does tomorrow hold for Jenny Jones? “I’ve spent so much time away in the mountains, it’s now about catching up on the coast. I love being back in Cornwall – the waves, the beaches, the outdoor living, it’s wild. Depending on the surf, I might go for a ride. I’m into road cycling…We’ll see,” she says laughing, before taking a last longing look towards the horizon.

SURFING THE WORLD – BOOK – CHRIS NELSON & DEMI TAYLOR

Surfing The World - A dream tour around the planet's best 80 waves as told though essays, interviews and images by Chris Nelson and Demi Taylor

So well researched, written and photo edited, it’s gotta be close to the best surf guide book I’ve ever seen.

Australian Surfing Life Magazine

THE IDEA

A dream tour around the planet’s best 80 waves as told though essays, interviews and images.

THE RESULT

Surfing The World conceived and written by Chris Nelson and Demi Taylor. This ground breaking 320pg best selling and critically acclaimed dreamers guide to the planet’s very best surf spots was published by Footprint Handbooks.

Picture edited by Demi Taylor featuring images from the cream of international surf photographers.

Best selling 320 pg full colour book on sale world-wide

Translation rights sold.

THE APPROACH

A dream tour around the planet’s best 80 waves… Yeah, you got us. We know the idea of ‘the best’ anything is a subjective one and while there can never be one definitive list of the best waves, we tried to get as close as possible by condensing the perspective of the wider surf community.

Through our contacts, we spoke to everyone from emerging talents to surf legends as well as fellow surf writers, editors, photographers and industry bigwigs from around the globe to get their take on the best waves out there and what makes them so good.

Some are waves that defined an era or a year, a few are forgotten treasures, while others are destined to become future classics. Draw up a list of your own top 10 waves and then get out there and ride them. This is the golden age of the surf trip. Your dream wave is a lot closer than you think.

In 320 pages, ‘Surfing the World‘ combines in-depth, accurate surf information, analysis of the waves and how they work, where they fit in terms of geography, history and culture, unearthing those personalities who have taken on and pioneered the breaks, telling tales of exploration and adventure accompanied by beautiful photography from surfing’s leading lensmen.

From ideation though development of the concept, research, writing, commissioning photography to guiding advertising and securing brand partnerships, we were involved in the whole process through to delivery.

320 pages that will have you packing your bags and out of the door before you even get halfway through it… buy it, and then get out there yourself.

SURFING EUROPE

SURFING EUROPE – BOOK – CHRIS NELSON & DEMI TAYLOR

Surfing Europe - the ultimate guide to surfing and travelling in Europe by Chris Nelson and Demi Taylor.

An invaluable resource – a one-stop guide to surfing across the continent.

Surfer Magazine

THE IDEA

To produce the ultimate guide and total resource to surfing and travelling in Europe. Original concept by Chris Nelson and Demi Taylor.

THE RESULT

Surfing Europe conceived and written by Chris Nelson and Demi Taylor. This groundbreaking 400pg full colour, best selling surf and travel guide, covers the Atlantic coastline of Europe and Morocco, combining practical information, anecdotes, tales and stunning photography. Published by Footprint Handbooks.

Picture edited by Demi Taylor featuring images from the cream of European surf photographers.

Critically acclaimed, 400 pg full colour book.

2 Editions published

THE APPROACH

This is the one that set the hook, the one we left the 9-5 of desk jobs for. Starting September 2001, we embarked on a year long road trip; surfing, charting, researching and exploring the coastline of Europe – finding out all the information a travelling surfer really wants including: the best places to surf, sleep, eat and drink, where to get your board fixed and what to do on the inevitable flat days.

Simply put, we wanted to create a innovative book that was all about maximising water time – helping surfers spend more time surfing and less time searching, whether they’re looking for where to score the best waves on the day or the best places to kick back and relax – and that book became ‘Surfing Europe’.

Taking in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Spain and the Canary Islands, Portugal, Morocco and Italy, ‘Surfing Europe‘ combines in-depth, accurate surf information and mapping, surf travel essentials and Surfers Tales – horses mouth stories of adventure bringing the coastline to life. From ideation to delivery, we conceived this durable, heavyweight to go the distance, so the book fits into any glove box making it the essential companion for anyone serious about surfing in Europe. The revolutionary format we created for publishers Footprint Handbooks spawned an entire series of activity guides.

An indispensable guide to any Euro jaunt.
