Criteria

What’s all this about then ? How do I take part/win/get involved.

The comp will take on the usual format of surf competition. Read the 5 categories carefully to see which surf craft you’ll be styling on and complete the entry form. Each category ie single fin – will progress through a knockout format to crown a winner. Back to back heats will be 20 mins duration, highest combined 2 wave score will advance – the judges decision is final. A 5 to 1 Fin Fair Challenge Champion will be crowned following a grand final between the winners of each category. A running order will be displayed in the competition muster area .The impartial and experienced judges of style will be on the beach and they will be applying the following criterial :

  • The surfer who exudes the most stylish surfing will advance and ultimately win the 5 to 1 challenge.
  • Judges will be looking for smooth expressive surfing, linking power with flow and stoke whilst balls out going for broke.
  • It’s not the difficulty of manouevre that counts it’s the style with which it’s executed.
  •  Approaching Lines – It’s all about panache and the way you cut a dash

On arrival at Porthtown, Cornwall, make your way to the Blue Bar side of the beach for registration, where a running order will be displayed. Start time to be announced soon. Come and see the organisers to register, then we know you’re out of bed. Competitors should check their name, heat number, rash vest colour and make sure they arrive on time to report to the beach marshal and listen for their heat to be called.  A claxon blast will mark the start of the heat and double arrruuuuggaaaahhh blast for the end. Paddle out time will be allowed before start of heat in accordance with conditions.

Under 16s 

All competitors under the age of 16 on the day of competition must have written parental consent. So bring along an adult to sign the forms at registration. All must also be competent sea swimmers and experienced surfers.

Competitors

All competitors take part, at their own risk. The organisers accept no responsibility for accidents and injuries. Qualified lifeguards will be on duty. All competitors must listen to the safety briefing prior to surfing at the beginning of the day. This is a rippy, powerful beach break with strong currents and rocks. If you are not a strong, confident and experienced surfer please come along and watch.

Boards

This competition is open to all surfers regardless of the cut of their jib and number of fins. Glass on fins, plugs, boxes, skegs and channel bottoms are all welcome so long as you enter into the correct and appropriate category as described below. Board length in each category is limited to 8ft 11 inches.

Board criteria are as follows. The scrutineers decision is final.

5 Fin set up or Bonzer

Boards with five fins, skegs or keels – in any formation in combination with any concaves or channels. These can be anything from classic Bonzers to modern mini-simmons, glassed in fins or fin-plugs.

4 Fin set up or Quad

Boards with four fins, skegs or keels – glassed in or fin-plugs, in any formation in combination with any concaves or channels. These can be anything from classic four fin fish to modern performance quad.

3 Fin set up or Thruster

Thrusters old or new, glassed in or fin-plugs, plus 2 + 1 set ups. Boards must be under 9ft in length.

2 Fin set up or Twinny

Boards with 2 fins, skegs or keels – in any formation in combination with any concaves or channels. These can be classic twin fins or fish through to modern mini-simmons. Boards with 3 or 5 fin plugs set up with just two fins are eligible.

1 Fin set up or Single

Boards with one fin, glassed or fin-plugs; boards with three or five fin-plugs ridden with just one fin are eligible. Boards must be under 9ft in length. No minimum length.

Shaper’s Shield

Boards should fall into one of the above 5 categories and within their definitions. They are expected to have been shaped by the individual claiming the Shield. If you have any questions please contact organisers here: hello@approachinglines.com

Entries

Entries are only available online HERE. Competitors can enter more than one category, but they must complete an entry PER CATEGORY. Competitors are only officially entered into the 5 to 1 Fin Fair Challenge once they have received a conformation email from the organisers. Entries are strictly limited in number so if for any reason you are unable to attend the event, please could you inform the organisers so that an alternate may be substituted.

I hereby agree to abide by the rules of competition stated on the day of the event. I accept complete and full responsibility for my own safety in and out of the water whilst taking part in the competition. The organisers accept no responsibility for your equipment, belongings or self during the event.
